Was this game ever officially released in Japan?
It's a pretty good game in its own right.

hmm, it looks like it hasn't been released in Japan. Also in the Staff there are only non-JPN names. any info if/why there was no JPN release?

Mmm, well I do know that Secret of Evermore was developed by Squaresoft USA shortly after Seiken Densetsu 2 was released.
I guess neither Squaresoft USA and/or Japan felt the need to release in Japan.

You could consider this game a follow up to the StarTropics Series.
SOE is using the Sieken 2 game engine. The spirtes have been upgraded to a more realistic coloring while the animation of the enimies is stays the same it still uses the power up system of the First and Second Mana game.
You could also consider this game in the class of the PSX Namco Tales series where each game is using the same engine as the last game or where Zelda Garden use the Starfox engine.
In fact there is probably objects lying around from Sieken 2 in SOE.
SOE never really needed a release in Japan seeing how the game was made for Americans. Also the game was kinda ridicoulous when you think back on it. It reminds me of how Kingdom Hearts was trying so hard pass as a adventure game when in truth it was an incompete RPG game.

Actually, SOE was completely developed by Square USA. It does not share any code from SOM whatsoever. They did, however, borrow quite a few ideas from SOM. I suggest checking the Secret of Evermore board on GameFAQs. One of the developers of the game made a lenghty post there containing lots of interesting info.

I have played the living daylights out of this game and the other game and there no doubt they are the same game. They have the same graphics, the same walk speed, and even the same Special attack chain reaction. Yes they added there own sprites, natural background music, slightly diffrent reactions, and even texts of many sorts.
It is the same game only edited to the creators specifications.
